Nothing but a coincidence

I’ve never really believed in coincidences.   You know, something random that happens to you and you brush it off as “nothing” or “just a coincidence”.   I don’t want to come off like a person who believes that because I dropped the peanut butter jar on the floor means that God is telling me never to eat a nut in any form for the rest of my life.  I just believe that many random things that happen in our lives aren’t as random as they really seem.   I’m starting to believe that God uses  scenario’s and circumstances for his purpose far more than I’ve ever realized.  A friend of mine accurately described this kind of thinking as “God weaving random events in our lives like a tapestry”.

Let me give you an example;

This morning we had our four month inspection done on our home (It’s been 8 months but who cares).    The guy that came over was a man who we’ve met before – nice guy and easy to talk to.  Following the inspection, as he filled out some paper work, we started some small talk about his family, life, work etc….  To make a long story short – he happens to be a Christian and attends a great church that’s close to ours.  It turns out that his heart is ministry and that he is really feeling a deep “calling” or “prompting” to pursue ministry  in a full time setting (even though he loves his job and loves the company he works for).  He opened up to Karen and I about the fears and risk involved in stepping out of the marketplace and into ministry as a vocation.    He was convinced that God is a faithful God that takes care of His own (which I fully agree but keep having to remind myself) but he’s wrestling with this major life decision.   All in all it was a really great conversation and open conversation of what God was doing in his life.  The meeting ended  with me praying for him and his family  (how many 4 month inspections end up like that … probably not too many)

Now was that meeting and conversation a coincidence?  That meeting was booked for a month.  Was it a coincedence that God has been stirring something in his heart so much at this particular  moment in his life – he needed to talk to someone … and *SURPRISE, he happens to have an appointment with a family in full time ministry?  Did this happen by chance? I don’t think so.  I could even say I know it wasn’t.

This morning was just one of many examples of times where random acts seem to be God ordained in our life.   I’m so thankful that God has really shown me that these mere “coincidences” aren’t random because it shows me that God is working around us.   God cares for us so much that He wants to use us in random ways (we just need to listen and be obedient) and he also uses others in our lives to “randomly” be there when we need it or help us when it looks like no one is there.  I need to keep my eyes open to Him working rather than at the belly button of my life.

This morning was a great reminder for me.   Here’s a thought – Maybe you’re reading this post isn’t just random at all? :-)

    Very cool experience. Thanks for the reminder. We had dinner with friends from our days in T.O. on Sat. evening and realize now that there was no coincidence in the timing of getting together as our lives over the past few years have run parallel in experience and where we are at in general. Very encouraging time when I needed it. Love ya. L.

    God does work in amazing ways…I mean a prairie final in the Grey Cup…it’s never happened before – truly a sign that God works in mysterious ways!! But seriously over the past few years there has been so many “God appointments” in my life that there is absolutley no way to chalk them all up to some freak chance of circumstance!

    Great thoughts Brad! I too think God has this wonderful way of placing certain people in our lives at certain times as an intricate part of building his Kingdom. That said, is being a “home inspector” an integral part of Kingdom living and thus a “full-time ministry”?

    Personally, I suppose it is! Where would we all be if our homes all fell apart and there was no one to fix them? Perhaps the real question for your new friend is, “How can I unite my calling as a home builder/inspector (his passion/dream, Acts 2:17) with my ministry goals and God’s vision for my life?” That seems like a diverse, creative, relational, and fun full-time ministry to be a part of!!!

    I agree with you Erik. Full time ministry doesn’t mean working in a church full-time. It would be great if those in the marketplace could realize that their lives are ministry and God has strategically placed them there for a reason.
