Christmas is coming

Last week someone e-mailed me a detailed countdown to when Christmas day will be coming.  My first reaction was disgust – primarily because I’m finding that Christmas decorations and Christmas music and Christmas clothing (ugly sweaters, primary green and red socks, earings to look like tree ornaments … ) and Christmas shopping is beginning sooner and sooner.  I know I might sound like an old man  but BACK IN MY DAY, CHRISTMAS DIDN’T REALLY START UNTIL DECEMBER!

It’s not like I don’t like Christmas.  I love Christmas.  I love what it stands for, I love getting and giving gifts (I don’t like paying for them though)  I love spending time with family.  I love the memories and the gingerbread and the LEFSA (which, by the way, I REALLY LOVE).  I love that I get some days off.  There are so many things that I love about it … BUT, it would be better for me if it started in December!

Who in their right mind wants to listen to the backstreet boys Christmas album in November … or ever?  Who wants to set up their Christmas tree before snow is on the ground.   And who  (you know who you are)  ever wants to put doves in a Christmas Tree :-)  (I know that this has nothing to do with November but I’ve never understood the whole ‘dove’ and Christmas combination).

I’ve made a decision – I’m going to start celebrating other holidays two months early.    January 1 I’m decorating my home and office with Valentine cupids.  The only snack I’m going to eat are those cinnamon hearts.  I’m going to have the band “CHICAGO” playing constanly from my office, vehicle and on my IPOD.  It’s going to be everything Valentines!

Oh wait …. I should change my holiday because everyday is valentines day in the Moffatt house (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).  :-)

O.K.  I have no idea what I’m saying.  All I wanted to say was – why can’t people just wait until December … WHY??

Ok Brad! Let me appease the Christmas spirit! I must first say Christmas is Bonnie’s and my favorite time of year. The earlier the better! Yes, we have already set out the decorations and as I look out the window yes, it has already started snowing. Come to think of it… I remember as a kid snow started falling in September/October and it seems as if there was a lot more of it (perhaps a little disheartening when you consider global warming).

It is a good point towards the doves. I’m not sure what the intentionality is behind it. If I were to guess though I would imagine it has more to do with the spirit of “Peace and Good will towards ALL men.” (“humanity” for those of you who rely on politically correct vernacular).

All things aside, I agree with you in the sense that “Christmas” does seem to be starting earlier and earlier. But, what is starting earlier? Christmas? Or the creeping spirit of consumeristic idolatry? I shutter as the latter gags my throat every time I enter a shopping mall or hear someone talk about their “wish list”! What happened to the SPIRIT of Christmas?! Perhaps, that is where Bonnie & I find our excitement… continually focusing and being drawn towards the Spirit and Spirituality of the Christmas Season!

I WISH there were a Backstreet Boys’ Christmas album, but they never made one.

    “back in your day”, eh?

When was that? In the days of Bing Crosby?

I’m beginning Christmas celebrations in our house, but we’re actually trying to get a jump on Christmas ‘08.

That’s funny. I blame all the retailers. If you want to be even more annoyed by early holidays, check out my Valentines Day Gifts site.
