Some Wednesday morning thoughts and links

  • My brother-in-law Darren and I had a great meeting yesterday with Dwayne Uglem the president of Briercrest College.  It was great to sit down and discuss the focus and future of Briercrest (the place where I recieved my B.A. and where God grabbed a hold of my life).  I’m excited for what the school represents and who the school wants to be.
  • My friend Ben had a great post this morning on his struggle with labeling himself a Christian.  Check it out here
  • Aaron, the youth pastor here at MTC ,has a new blog – check it out here
  • I bought two books yesterday that I’m excited to read.  This one and This one
  • Finally - I’m working on a 6 week sermon series starting Easter called “hope”.  It will be looking at Christ’ death and resurrection then the hope it brought through the book of Acts.  Here’s a sneak peak of a graphic Sarah made for us.  It’s a work in progress but I love the direction.  She has six more (she’s talented)

So what nuggets of hope did you get from your meeting with Dwayne? I’ll admit I’ve been pretty skeptical of anything Briercrest over the past few years.

He shared the direction and passion that he wanted briercrest to focus on. They have gotten rid of some programs; sports ministry, youth ministry in the seminary. They have made a decision to always have 2 – 3 staff per program and at least 80 students in each program. This way they can always rely on different voices for teaching rather than one voice. They have made a “re”focus back onto scripture and the importance this plays in their programs. This means that each program is based upon theological foundations rather than the end result. They have decided that they will stay a biblical training ground for those who; 1. want to get into ministry 2. want to get into the secular world.

This isn’t everything but it’s the highlights. He was very honest with us and shared from the heart. I appreciated it.

And now I can’t take my seminary degree b/c they dropped the youth ministry before I officially enrolled. Do you think you can get them to change their minds?
